Abstract

The paper examined the extent to which news graphics influence the selection and readership of locally produced newspapers in Uyo Metropolis of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria. Using survey method, it was found, among other things, that majority of the respondents, who were civil servants working in the State Capital, were not only exposed to graphic elements in locally produced newspapers in the
State, but were also influenced by those graphic elements. However, it was found out that majority of the respondents were not satisfied with the general presentation of some graphic elements in the newspapers. This informs the conclusion that the respondents were generally conscious of some of the shortcomings in graphic handling by some newspapers in the society. It was, therefore, recommended that local newspapers in Akwa Ibom State should take graphic presentation more seriously if they want to sustain readership.
